Empowering Girls to Be Leaders in Their Lives, Community

Participants help distribute food to the community.

Girls on the Run - DC (GOTR-DC) is a positive youth development program serving girls in grades 3rd - 5th (Girls on the Run) and 6th - 8th (Heart and Sole) in all 8 Wards of DC and parts of Prince George’s County, MD.

The program uses an experienced-based curriculum that creatively integrates running during a 10-week season in the fall and spring.

Weekly lessons, led by trained Volunteer Coaches, include information and tools they need to meet life’s pressing challenges like peer pressure, bullying, body image, developing healthy relationships and healthy living.

The season culminates with program participants positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a non-competitive 5K.

More than a running program, GOTR-DC helps girls improve and grow their competence, develop strength of character, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to their communities and society.

One of the most popular lessons of the season is the community impact project. This is when the team channels their confidence, empathy and compassion into a service project that uplifts a cause near to their hearts. Between park clean-ups, food drives and bake sales, our participants never cease to amaze us with their perseverance and giving spirits.

Ukraine fundraiser

This team graciously organized a bake sale to support families in Ukraine. They raised more than $1,000 for the cause!

Through our focus on leadership and civic engagement, Girls on the Run - DC is helping to prepare young girls to be leaders in their own lives and in their communities. By learning to set goals, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively, girls are empowered to be agents of change in their schools, neighborhoods, and beyond.

If you or someone you know is interested in signing up a child for a GOTR-DC program, visit www.gotrdc.org/our-locations for a complete list of available locations with practice days and times.

Team rosters close on Sunday, March 19.
