What time do I need to arrive?
Plan to arrive at Freedom Plaza by 7:30am to pick-up your race packet and take advantage of the pre-race festivities. The race starts promptly at 9:00am and will end at 10:30am.
Can I participate with my child?
For safety reasons, parents are not allowed to “dash” with their child unless the meet one or more of the following special circumstances: Your child is 3 or 4 and will not be able to dash without assistance OR your child has a medical condition and requires assistance.
Is the Kids’ Dash timed?
The Kids’ Dash is not a timed event.
How much does it cost to participate, and what will my child receive?
There is a $10 registration fee for all Kids’ Dash participants. The registration fee includes a bib, a medal, and access to all pre-race activities.
What age does my child have to be to participate in the Kids’ Dash?
Children between the ages of 3-10 are eligible to participate in a ¼ mile dash on Pennsylvania Avenue. The dash will begin at 10:45am. Note: Girls on the Run participates are pre-registered for the 5K, not the Kids’ Dash. If you wish to register her for the Kids’ Dash, there will be a separate fee.
What does the color on by bib mean?
We will line up schools for the start of the race according to the color on your race number, or bib. Your school team will proceed to the starting area when your color has been called. We do this to control the congestion on the course. The color on the bib will also help you find your daughter’s team sign.
When and where can I pick-up my race packet?
You can pick-up your packet at the Packet Pick-Up tent on race day. Packet pick-up will be available from 7:30-8:45am. For an additional fee, you can have your bib mailed to you in advance, which will allow you to skip the lines on race day.
I registered and can no longer attend the event. Can I receive a refund or transfer my registration to someone else?
All registrations are non-refundable, however, we do allow participants to transfer bib numbers. Please email email@example.com if you need to transfer your bib. Transfers will be allowed through Wednesday, May 31st.
Can I register on race day?
Yes, race day registration is $50 and can be paid with credit card. Registration will be open from 7:30-8:45am. Please note that premium shirt size is not guaranteed if you register on race day.
What is the best way to get to Freedom Plaza?
Take Metro – We encourage participants to use the metro to travel to and from Freedom Plaza. Please note that the metro will not open until 7:00am. The closest metro stations to the race start area are Federal Triangle (Blue/Orange/Silver Lines) and Metro Center (Blue/Orange/Silver/Red Lines).
What if I drive to the race?
There is no exact address for Freedom Plaza. When using GPS, please use the intersection of 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. There are several parking lots near Freedom Plaza. If you are driving, leave extra time to park and walk to the site. Detailed parking garage information will be listed closer to Race day.
Where can I get dropped off if I want to take a taxi or Uber to the 5K?
There is no exact address for Freedom Plaza. Please use the intersection of 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.
Why do I need to arrive so early?
There are a few reasons. Arriving early ensures you arrive at the race on time and allows you to participate in the pre-race festivities, which include music and dancing, hair ribbons and hair spray. Arriving early also ensures that you have time to meet your GOTR team before the race for last minute instructions and words of encouragement.
I am a GOTR participant running the 5K. Where do I go and where do I find my Coach?
Teams will meet on Freedom Plaza. Signs for each team (school) are placed around the Plaza, alphabetically. You will meet your GOTR team at your team sign. Additionally, there will be colored flags to help you determine where your team sign will be. The color of the flags corresponds to the color on your daughter’s bib.
What do I need to bring with me to the 5K?
Bring your great attitude and sunny smile! Race day is hectic and requires a lot of patience and a sense of humor. GOTR Coaches will have race numbers, or bibs, and safety pins for each GOTR participant. These will be handed out to GOTR participants before the race.
I am (or someone in our family/network) my daughter’s Buddy Runner and need to pick up my race packet.
Upon arrival, please proceed to the Packet Pick Up tent as noted on the attached course map to pick up your bib number. Then proceed to the Team Meeting area.
Is there a place to check my belongings before the start of the 5K?
Yes, bag check will open at 7:30am. Runner must place their belongings in the clear bag received at packet pick-up and check their bag no later than 8:45am. We cannot accept backpacks or other large items and checked bags must be picked-up by 11:30am.
How far is the Girls on the Run - DC 5K?
The 5K is a flat, 3.1 mile, out-and-back course.
Where is the Starting Line?
The starting line is located on Pennsylvania Avenue at 12th Street. You will see a giant inflatable arch denoting the start and finish line. Please see the course map for more details.
Where do I go after my girl starts the race?
You can watch the race from alongside the course.
Will there be water at the Finish Line?
Yes, there will be water and food for race participants in the race festival area.
Where do I meet my runner after he/she crosses the finish line?
You may meet your runner outside the barricaded finishing area, or you can arrange to meet him/her at their school meeting sign. See the attached course map.
Is the 5K course safe?
The course is as safe as any outdoor event can be. We are fortunate in that our GOTR coaches are CPR and First Aid Certified, which makes each of them capable first-responders. We also have medical professionals and an ambulance on the premises during the entire event. We have also hired Metropolitan Police Officers to be on site for the duration of the event.
I can’t find my daughter/son/child/parent. What do I do?
Proceed to the Lost Child tent. There, a GOTR-DC staff member will radio the child’s information to personnel on the course and start/finish line to alert them about the missing child. Missing children will also be escorted to the Lost Child tent.
My girl’s running companion can’t come. What should I do?
You should speak with your girl’s Coach about options to run with other adult buddy runners. Perhaps there’s a parent on your team who can run with two girls, or perhaps your Coach can run with your girl. Your Coach should be able to help you find a solution.
Can I participate with a stroller or in a wheelchair?
Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. For safety reasons, we encourage people who are walking or pushing strollers/wheelchairs to line up in the back of the starting line instead of the front.
May I bring my dog to the 5K?
Dogs are permitted to attend the 5K, but must be up-to-date on shots and not on a retractable leash.
Can I purchase Girls on the Run merchandise at the 5K?
Yes! Pick-up some awesome swag at the merchandise tent – t-shirts, hats, headband, water bottles, and more. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.
